In-Depth Penobscot River Rafting Trip Information:
We meet at 8:00am and start the day by outfitting the guests and providing a detailed safety lecture. Next, we load on the bus and head to Nesowdnahunk Falls the first rapid of the Lower Penobscot River. We start our full day trip on the Lower Penobscot so people warm up and get their raft together as a team.
After Nesowdnahunk Falls, we stop at a natural water slide then run three more class 3-4 rapids before lunch. At the bottom of the Lower River we have a BBQ lunch of grilled steak, chicken, or veggie burger with sides and dessert.
Following lunch we ride the bus back up to McKay Station at the top of Ripogenous gorge. Maine white water rafting doesn’t get any better than the Upper Penobscot River. The Gorge section and the Cribworks are famous for delivering intense thrills.
The Penobscot River Gorge and Crib
The Gorge Section starts with “Exterminator” the hardest hitting hole on the East Coast. Paddle through that and your faced with the “StairCase” section and “The Stairmaster”. Run the “Stairmaster” and your sure to lose a lot of weight in your boat. After you make it through the Gorge section, you raft several class II and III rapids before you get to “The Cribworks”.
Named “The Cribworks” because of the log cribbing that contained the log flows during the river drives, “The Cribworks” is a challenging technical rapid that requires rafting guides to prepare their crews and pay the up-most attention. River driving was the practice of floating logs cut in the woods down the river to the saw and paper mills in town (Millinocket). Companies that don’t raft “Canada Falls” consider it the most challenging in Maine.
Getting through the Cribworks sets you up for Amberjack, the last rapid of the day, and a white water playground. Right after Amberjack we take out and ride back to base. Back at base we collect the gear and show the photo and video show of the day.
